Low-Cal Version
A lighter hoisin-style sauce using soy sauce, miso, five-spice, ginger, garlic, and a zero-kcal sweetener.
Ingredients
- ½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- Zero-kcal sweetener, to taste, approximately 2 tbsp sugar equivalent
- 1 tsp white or awase miso paste
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp five-spice powder
- ¼ tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp sesame oil
- Optional: pinch chili powder or sriracha, to taste
Method
- Add all ingredients to a bowl or blender.
- Whisk or blend until completely smooth and glossy.
- Simmer gently for 3 to 5 minutes to deepen the flavour.
- Cool slightly. The sauce will thicken naturally as it rests.

- 1½ tbsp honey
- ⅛ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp natural peanut butter
- 2 tsp rice vinegar
- 1 small garlic clove, grated
- 2 tsp water
- ½ tsp sriracha sauce
Method
- Add all ingredients to a bowl or blender.
- Whisk or blend until smooth and fully combined.
- Taste and adjust salt, sweetness, or heat if needed.
- Use immediately, or store in an airtight container in the fridge.
