Tonkatsu Sauce

A lighter, smooth tonkatsu-style sauce with sweet, tangy, savoury depth and no added sugar.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsweetened tomato passata or smooth tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup low-sodium Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Zero-kcal sweetener, to taste, equivalent to approximately 2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • Pinch black pepper
  • Water to thin, as needed

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth.
  3. Transfer to a small pot and gently simmer for 5 to 8 minutes to deepen the flavour.
  4. Cool slightly before serving or storing.
